Is a Corgi Suited to Life in Israel

Corgis come from cool, rainy Wales, so future owners often ask: will the dog suffer in our heat? The short answer: corgis live wonderfully in Israel as long as the owner follows a few simple rules. Our kennel is located in the Jordan Valley, at the foot of Mount Sartaba — one of the hottest corners of the country — and our dogs live here all year round: walking, playing and raising puppies.

The key to a comfortable corgi life in the south is the right summer routine, constant access to water and shade, and proper coat care. Let us go through it step by step.

Heat and the Walking Schedule

The main rule is simple: in summer we walk when the sun is low.

  • Morning is the best walk of the day: before eight or nine the air is still relatively cool, so you can run and train.
  • Midday — only short necessity breaks, in the shade and without active games.
  • Evening — the second full walk after sunset, once the asphalt and the air have cooled down.

Ball games, jogging and training sessions move to the early morning, the late evening or indoors with air conditioning during the hot months. A corgi is an enthusiast: he will chase a ball even at noon without realising he is overheating, so knowing when to stop is the owner's job.

Signs of overheating: very heavy rapid panting, lethargy, a bright red tongue and gums, unsteady gait. In that situation take the dog into shade or a cool space immediately, offer water, wet the belly and paws with cool (not icy) water and contact a vet if you have the slightest doubt.

A separate note about age: puppies and senior dogs cope with heat worse than adults and need an even gentler routine. And in the coastal cities high humidity adds to the temperature — there it is especially important not to overdo summer exercise.

Hot Asphalt and Paws

On a summer day in Israel asphalt gets hot enough to burn paw pads. The check takes five seconds: press your palm to the asphalt — if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your dog. Choose routes over grass and dirt, and during peak heat hours simply stay home.

Water and Shade

  • Fresh water must always be available at home — ideally several bowls in different spots.
  • Take a bottle and a folding bowl on walks and trips.
  • A permanently shaded corner in the yard or on the balcony is a must.
  • Many corgis adore water: a kiddie pool in the yard is a great summer activity and a way to cool down.
  • And most importantly: never, not even for a minute, leave a dog in a car. In summer the cabin heats to a lethal temperature within minutes.

Coat, Shedding and Air Conditioning

The corgi has a double coat: a soft dense undercoat and a harsh outer coat. It works like a thermos — protecting against both cold and heat — which is why a corgi must never be shaved: without the coat the dog overheats faster and risks sunburn.

Corgis shed noticeably: two big seasonal undercoat blows a year plus moderate shedding all year round. In a hot climate the seasonal shed can be more drawn out. What helps:

  • brushing two or three times a week, daily during shedding season;
  • a bath every month or two with thorough drying of the undercoat;
  • quality food — coat condition depends directly on the diet.

Air conditioning in summer is not a luxury but a normal part of a dog's life in Israel. A comfortable temperature for a corgi is around twenty-four to twenty-six degrees. Just make sure the dog does not lie for hours directly under the cold air stream. And one more detail people often forget: when stepping out of a cool room into the heat, give the dog a couple of minutes in the shade to adjust instead of launching straight into an active walk.

Corgis and Israel Are a Good Match

Corgis have long been living happily all over the country, from the streets of Haifa to the southern villages. Our puppies are born and raised in this very climate, next to their mother and in the familiar heat, so moving to a new home in Israel will not be a climate shock for them. Have a look at our litters, meet our dogs — and if you are ready for the next step, leave a request on the reservation page and we will tell you more.
