**Rabies is one of the most dangerous viral diseases affecting mammals, including dogs and humans.** It is a zoonotic disease that, once clinical signs appear, is almost always fatal. This article explains how rabies virus infection occurs, how the virus travels through the nervous system, and why infected animals develop characteristic behavioral changes. It also describes why bites are the main route of transmission, why dogs that bite humans are placed under 10-day observation, and how this period is related to the progression of the disease. Special attention is given to rabies prevention in Israel, including vaccination schedules, the role of maternal antibodies, legal requirements, and the responsibility of dog owners.
